Ericeira Local Surf School has been teaching surfers from all over the world since 2012. The surf school was created by a local surfer who wanted to share his lifelong passion for surfing. The main objective of the surf school is not just that you have an unforgettable experience, but to teach you the right way, that way we keep our classes in small groups to guarantee attention and dedication to each student.
Our friendly and experienced coaches provide a wealth of knowledge of all aspects of surfing. We are dedicated to sharing this knowledge of not only board riding technique but also surfing awareness and how to surf safely. Regardless of age or size, our accredited surf coaches are trained to support and recognize individual learning levels. Our surf instructors have been trained and accredited by the Portuguese Surfing Federation.
Hi! My name is Gonçalo Mira and I’m the founder of Ericeira Local Surf School, created in 2012 with the dream of sharing what I love most: the sea and surfing.
I was born and raised here in Ericeira, in a traditional fishing family, and spent the first 20 years of my life just 20 metres from the beach. The ocean has always been a part of me. I started out bodyboarding, but at 16 I tried surfing for the first time… and it was love at first wave. I’ve never looked back.
In 2006, I completed my surf coach certification with the Portuguese Surfing Federation and began teaching at several local schools, until I felt it was time to create my own space — something more personal, more authentic, more connected to people.
Surfing is one of my biggest passions — but so is fishing. Even during the busiest times of the year, I always make time for at least one surf session a day to stay connected to the sea. In the winter, I often travel to paradise surf spots around the world.
I was also a lifeguard for several years, and I hold a navigation licence, which gives me an even deeper understanding and respect for the ocean — something I bring into every lesson I teach.
